I love this. I'm going to have to incorporate some of this into my life. As much as I love pocket notebooks, I already have a reading log in a larger notebook that fits in my bag that I carry with me, so it'll be some time before I switch over to a pocket notebook, but I can start adding notes at the end of the month and about the books I am reading
While I've seen other people bring up this habit of his, I haven't seen anyone refer to "Montaigne Notes" specifically. So consider that term freshly minted. Spread the word!
Do you record only book reading in your Reading Log? What about other reading like articles and essays?
I have never attempted to keep anything of the sort (not a commonplace book nor reading log) but can see the value in recording my thoughts on things I read generally, not just books.
I might need to think about how to capture the source of the article or essay I read (and the link). But much like for for books, can see the long term value.
Absolutely. I feel like this is where a kind of zettelkasten comes in handy. Currently, I just have a “2024 Notes” and “Commonplace” in Apple Notes; everything that’s initially interest goes in the yearly note, and I throw any links or quotes I want to revisit in the Commonplace one. It’s simple and it works, but I’m thinking up something new.
Good callout. Typically, I record notes on articles, podcasts, or videos in a Catch-All. It’s not the most permanent solution or something I’d do for deep research. But for having an overview of passing interests it works great: https://open.substack.com/pub/armchairnotes/p/notebook-processing-catch-alls
Read that. That's what led me to your Reading Log article.
Any system for such things would need to capture the source details. Unlike a book, it's not as simple as a title. Need the link to a location. Maybe saving it within a note-taking app (eg: Obsidian) means you only need to worry about the title? Needs more thought.

Lovely method. Is “Montaigne Notes” an official term or something you coined?
